Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition characterized by skin redness and facial rash. It affects especially those with blue eyes, fair skin, and of Celtic origin. It may be not be contagious in some cases but may be recurrent at most.

Acne rosacea is a recurring form of acne which affects not only the skin but also the eye. Cases of rosacea are usually found on sun exposed areas of the face and the upper body.

The occurrence of acne rosacea is usually associated with alcoholism and consumption of spicy foods and hot drinks. When the skin is inflamed, further complications may develop such as swelling, papules, and pustules. At a later part of the transition, skin lesions may begin to appear.

This skin problem typically starts between the ages of 30 and 60 years in adults. Although in very rare instances, rosacea may also be found in children. On the average, statistics show that women are more prone to acquiring acne rosacea with twice as much than men.

Rosacea affecting the eyes is even between males and females. Black Americans have been reported also to be at greater risk of both acne rosacea and ocular rosacea. Although the pigmentation of the black population may cover the existing lesions, such mask may fail the further diagnosis and treatment.

Common Causes

Some contributing factors are identified for acne rosacea such as genetic, vascular, and environmental considerations. However, the main cause of such skin problem is still unknown. The growth of papules in rosacea cases is attributed by hair follicle mites (Demodex folliculorum). Overuse of facial creams, oils, and topical steroids may aggravate symptoms of acne rosacea.

Signs and Symptoms

For the common acne rosacea, blushing or flushing occurs longer than and more often than usual. And as common in skin problems, skin rashes and redness may appear on some parts of the face. Sometimes it resembles that of sunburn and may worsen if not treated.

Some patients may experience burning and stinging sensations followed by occasions of papules, pustules or nodules. The worse part for these symptoms is the eruption of the pimple-like growths which later results to a dry skin.

In ocular rosacea, not only the eyelids are affected but also the eyes itself. There is redness and soreness.

Treatment

The most basic prescriptions by dermatologists in treating acne rosacea is a combination of antibiotic gel and oral antibiotics. The latter medication controls symptoms such as the occurrence of papules or pustules and skin redness. The gel works also to control other symptoms present relative to the skin problem.
Dermatologists may have a lifestyle check on certain patients to determine factors causing blushing or flushing. However, oral antibiotics should not be administered for a longer period than that prescribed by health experts. Side effects such as stomach upset and sun sensitivity may occur.
